While speaking to TV Line, co-showrunners Miles Millar and Al Gough revealed that they planned Wednesday storylines as far out as “four seasons.” It simply means that they do have a lot to cover. Their full quote reads:
“We felt like we just touched the surface with those characters and the actors are so amazing in those roles. It’s important for Wednesday to forge her own path outside the family but that the writers room would “definitely” be interested in featuring more of the Addams family dynamic in future seasons.”
This quote itself is enough to say a lot about the future installment. One thing which I’ve noticed in their interview is the focus on the arcs of Wednesday. It simply means that we will be exploring the depths of her character, powers and psychology. The show may also show her getting independency from her family and hence— “forging her own path“.
Season 1 was ending with pretty big cliffhangers that can easily set up multiple future installments (both the sequel season and spin-offs). Despite this, it seems like Netflix is more into the journey of Wednesday in order to bring her trueself into lights. But hey! That’s still not over yet, because Jenna Ortega herself is sharing so many hints.
While talking to Entertainment Tonight in November 2022, the actress has hinted at the darker side of her character. Jenna said, “I kind of want her to be darker. I want her to get more in the nitty-gritty of things and not play things so safe, because there are a lot of lines about her saving the school and doing whatever, but for me, her main drive with the monster is of a competitiveness. Kind of, ‘Man, how’s this guy doing this?”
Oh my goodness, Wednesday in her villain arc? That’s just too good to be true right? She continued, “I think I want it to continue down an antihero stream rather than a typical hero“. Well, one thing is confirmed— Wednesday will go through the series of changes and development in her character. We will be getting a protagonist with a mature mindset, coupled up with her darker arcs.
Additionally, I am also expecting the return of our old ‘villain’. Now that he is facing the results of his evil deeds, this character can still play a victim card on our Wednesday. Since Jenna is hinting at the “anti-hero” side of her character— It is highly possible that she can engage with many other evil ‘big had’ who can eventually bring in more chaos at Nevermore.
Either way, a lot can be explored. I mean, the possibilities of this universe are really endless. Netflix can also take the route of the Addams Family while exploring their backstories and challenges.
